CROSS-COUNTRY & FELL RUNNING

  • Bells of Pattingham Run 1st Lady 2004, 2nd Lady 2005 (16th & 21th in fields of nearly 1000)

I vividly remember the 2004 race. Kate turned up late, spotted a pair of brand new Walsh trainers on the kit stall at a bargain price. She put them on, tying them up as she went to the start and won the race.      Pete Burns.

  • Tegs Nose Fell Race 1st Lady 2006

  • Staffs Knot 1st Lady 1996, 2005, 2008 (22nd of 500)

  • Staffordshire Moorlands Summer Series 2005 1st Lady

  • Staffordshire X Country Championships 2005

  • Passing Cloud Fell Race 1st Lady 2010

  • Cannock Chase Trig point Race 1st Lady 2011, 2012

Kate was modest to the point of dismissing her past achievements. Many would have no idea of the sporting standards she reached. I list some here. It is far from complete.

3 MILES

  • Sentinel 3mile 1st Lady 1995 (17.41), 1996 (17.30)

"Todays Runner" Magazine used to publish rankings of UK Athletes (as a forerunner to the Power of 10 Rankings). In the year 1999-2000 Kate was in the Top 20 Ladies for all road distances up to and including Half Marathon:

  • 15th for 5 miles

  • 18th for 10K

  • 17th for 10 miles

  • 10th for Half Marathon

This was with esteemed company, including Paula Radcliffe, Jo Pavey, Hayley and Liz Yelling

But more impressive than all of this was Kate's sportmanship. She'd volunteer for a relay team, tell a rival if they were going the wrong way, always double back to cheer others in and be the first to show interest and congratulate the achievements of others.

One thing Kate admitted to me she was proud of was when she won a race outright, quietly beating all the men. That and finishing the 2007 Edale Skyline Fell Race in a full blizzard. SM
